On The Jazz

IMG_20140719_135402Edinburgh’s Grassmarket is home to FREE music this afternoon as part of the Edinburgh Jazz Festival.  Our day has been filled with inspirational toe tapping which is  being performed live just around the corner from us.  Why, we are all on the jazz!

The International Jazz festival is an amazing chance to hear live music performed throughout the city, from free venues through to all time heros filling beautiful spaces like Edinburgh’s Queens Hall and Festival Theatres, there’s sure to be something for everyone!  For more information click here.

There is a great history of music inspiring art works, above is Louise Smurthwaite’s “Blue Jazz” which as the title implies, has a strong relationship back to music, we believe it was designed for an album cover.  Have a look at some of Louise’s other works here.

Victoria Street's cool, officially!

filename_ext_2971010kNot that our beautiful Red Door Gallery made it into the photo frame, but we’re pleased to see that lovely Victoria Street has made it into ‘British 20 Coolest Streets’ in the  Telegraph last weekend!  This means Victoria Street’s cool, officially!

““Victoria Street is just a stone’s throw from the Royal Mile and probably the most picturesque location in the city,” says Edward Douglas-Home of Knight Frank Edinburgh. “It is a quirky, traditional cobbled street, with hanging baskets and colourful exteriors.” As well as a wealth of shops, bars and restaurants, there is the Underbelly, one of the main venues during the Festival.”

new red door Our newly painted and florwer-afied  Red Door Shop front is looking super inviting too, we hope you enjoy the view.  Thanks to the greater grassmarket for their help with this venture, look out for photos of our revamp coming to our blog soon, and perhaps to a local newspaper too!

Napier University student's product design

New Designer’s, London is in full swing this week and is a land mark event for many students attending the Scottish Art and Design Schools.  The Red Door Gallery is pleased to introduce pieces created by 2 recent graduates from Napier University, Edinburgh, both of whom are presently exhibiting at New Designers.  Keiron Calder and Stewart Davies won the chance to exhibit their pieces with The Red Door Gallery as part of a competition run by Napier University and The Red Door Gallery, and we think their designs stand out as rather innovative!

PaperFanBlue InstructionsSQUStewart Davies made this remarkable DIY amplifier which fits most standard phones.  All you need is some time, a stanley knife, cutting mat and a little dab of glue.  Click here to see more details.

blueKeiron Clader created this concept piece, aptly titled “Pocket Regurgitation” which holds all your valuables safely when you come home and empty out your pockets!  Fits most standard phones and comes in 3 pop-tastic colours. Click here to see more details.

Compeition to win a £250 shopping trip!

IndieRetailerMonth

July 1st to 31st  is Indie Retailer Month and The Red Door Gallery is celebrating by teaming up with our rather inspirational neighbours independent shops, cafes and the Greater Grassmarket team to bring you one of the most straight forward competitions of all time.

There is so much on offer here in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town that we just want you to come and take a look!  As you meander along, just send out a wee tweet to your favourite businesses, maybe include a wee snap of your most coveted items.  This will give the business a ‘lil Twitter boost and is an excellent way for you to support the local traders, shops, cafes, bars and galleries who help keep your city interesting, yet doesn’t cost you a penny!

As a thank you, you will be entered into a prize draw, the winner will receive £250 to spend in the Greater Grassmarket Area – we’d all quite like that!  Even if you don’t win, perhaps your palls will take the hint come birthday time!

As an extra Red Door thank you, we will re-tweet your tweet (unless you are very naughty!) to our rather substantial followers, so get creative with your photos of The Red Door Gallery!

The competition rules area as follows:

  • One entry per Twitter account per Greater Grassmarket business. To get more entries, you must tweet to more businesses in the Greater Grassmarket area

  • Both the business twitter handle and the hashtag must be included for the tweet to be a valid entry eg #IndieGrassmarket and @RedDoor_Gallery

  • Entries will be accepted from 1st – 31st July (Independent Retailer Month)

  • The £250 prize can be spent in any of the Greater Grassmarket businesses on a date agreed with the Greater Grassmarket BID management.

  • By entering, permission is given to use messages for marketing purposes and the prize winner gives permission to use them and their day out for marketing purposes.
