Yes! This is The Kit!

Just a quick nudge in the direction of This Is The Kit today friends! One of the Red Door gang saw them live a wee while ago supporting Francois And The Atlas Mountain and were stunned by the voice of Kate Staples and the band's beautiful arrangements of banjo, trumpet and electric guitars. We've since spotted them on Radio 6 for Mark Riley and still can't get enough! Check out the lush videos above and you could even try and catch them live somewhere near you too!

Look Who's Popped Up In Our Window

These cute little Hedgehogs and Leveret Hares are the work of local glass artist Rachel Elliot.
Rachel has been working with glass since 2000 when she attended an evening class in leaded stained glass. She has since gone on to study at Edinburgh College of Art, Graduating in 2007 with a degree in Applied Arts: Architectural Glass.
In 2009 she took the plunge and set up her own glass studio. From here she makes all her Comissions, Sculptures, Giftware and teaches glass making classes. She's one busy lady.
Here's Rachel busy working away in her studio.

Our favourite little guy is the Autum Hedgehog.
If you're local to Edinburgh then you must come and check these little guys hanging out in our window.
Those unfortunate not to be local can buy her Leveret Hares on our website.

A Dedicated Follower Of...Grimes

So this is the beginning of a fresh new regular part of The Red Door blog! Which is all about fashion! We don't want this to be about expensive catwalk shows or big name labels -  more fashion icons in the making and independent designers with an eye for innovation. Hence the first post....Grimes. Grimes aka Claire Boucher is an electronica musician from Canada, who seems to be grabbing the world by storm! We definitely recommend checking her music out but we wanted to acknowledge her influence on street trend right now with her bubblegum hair and penchant for eyeball jewellery, you might have seen a copycat without even knowing it! We love her free spirited sense of style and creativity....check her out!

Only Yesterday

We have been following the films of Studio Ghibli (the Japanese equivalent of Disney but better?!) for a wee while now but after delving into their back catalogue we came across this beautifully poignant and heart felt animation about memories of childhood called 'Only Yesterday'. You may know Studio Ghibli from their more recent releases Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo...well, this one is maybe a little less silly and fantastical, apart from the best  scene, when the 10 year old protagonist falls in love and spontaneously flies into the air and swims through the clouds....sooooo cute!

Meet Mick and Audrey - vintage furniatrue redesigned by @ziggysawdust_

 Meet Mick....

 Meet Audrey....

Ziggy Sawdust is an Edinburgh based furniture redesign business, providing you with one-of-a-kind, lovingly reworked pieces to brighten up your home.  You may have already seen them in our windows!

Focusing on furniture from the 1950s- 1970s, Ziggy Sawdust transforms them from tired, dated pieces into contemporary creations, whilst keeping a retro inspired twist.
Amy Dolan is the brains behind the business, who was initially inspired to create sculptures from found furniture. Amy has since graduated from Art School and opted to use her woodwork skills and rapport with furniture to make unique creations that are both functional and fun!
Ziggy Sawdust’s well loved pieces offer an idealistic escape from tedium of generic, flat-packed furniture... most furniture today just isn't built to last, but the pieces that she sources have already stood the test of time.
If you would like to have a piece of furniture given the Ziggy Sawdust treatment, please just ask at The Red Door Gallery and we can hello arrange a Bespoke product appointment for you.

New window exhibition fun, fresh in from Karoline Rerrie!

FORREST
by

Karoline Rerrie displays her collection of Folk Trees and Folk Art inspired
screen prints in a window feature created especially for
The Red Door Gallery, Edinburgh.

Karoline’s Folk Trees have walked of their pages and a little forest of them
have sprung up overnight. She has brought the trees to life, giving them
newly found 3 dimensional forms by combining screen printing, card, cutting,
fabric and even a bit of sewing.

Karoline is an illustrator who creates images by hand using drawing,
painting, silk screen printing and Japanese Gocco printing. She has
always seen her work as a craft and strives  to maintain a handmade
element which is what initially led her to explore printmaking.
Karoline now designs, makes and sells a range of multiples
including greetings cards, small books and prints. She also collaborates
with other illustrators to produce limited edition fanzines and colouring
in books combining different types of printing. And as if that isn’t enough
she co-ordinates the publication of the Girls Who Draw series of
postcard books which feature her work and that of other women illustrators.

Silk screen prints, colouring in books, cards and collaborative projects alike,
Karoline’s works have been exhibited in The Red Door Gallery since 2009
and this exhibition is as detailed and wondrous as her
previous folio of works.

Summer Hola iday fun with Cliff Richard... you gotta love him!

September is half way through and as we've been working our socks of here at The Red Door Gallery over August, and Karoline Rerrie and Ziggy Sawdust are holding fort in our window of a exhibition, its time for a wee wonder to Vitnam... a late summeer holiday for Nicky!  It was either Cliff Richard or some Nam themed hip hop, and its turns out, Cliff won.  See you in a few weeks!

New Seymour prints!

For those of you looking to add to your collection or even those who can appreciate an amazingly well executed, creepy eery graphic illustration, check out these new prints from Seymour! There's no doubt this guy has an imagination with penmanship to match! They've just arrived into the gallery along with a collection of A6 size characters framed in Seymour's customary black Victorian style frame. If these might be out your budget then they come unframed too for only £12.50!

Meet Howard....the Red Panda!

We very recently discovered Jamie Mitchell here at the Gallery. We discovered his beautiful, vibrant and simultaneously cute illustrations through the most recent issue of AMMO magazine which we sell here. The lovely Issue 9 has been adorned with the colourful bird pattern above. The magazine heavily features the work of the collective he has co-founded  - Ohh Deer - so we had to get our hands on some of their wares! We snatched up some brilliant cushions (one of which features Howard, the Red Panda above), sketchbooks and cards and they have been selling super fast!!!! We do love a success story...

Get another cushion on that sofa!

We very recently received these absolutely brilliant cushions in the post and they are now gracing our lovely window! What is it about the combination of balloons, bikes and Victorian style cross hatching that makes us swoon over these bad boys?! Some of us wish we could find some excuse to throw one more cushion on their sofa even if it is bordering on pillow madness already. In case you've swooned too...Mr. Bolster cushion is currently £68 and Mr. square cushion is £55 and we've only got one of each! So don't let your sofa get too lonely...maybe it needs just one more cushion!?

Get off the beaten track

There's so much to do in the city at this time of year it's hard to know where to start, so here's a couple of little gems to be found this weekend away from the well beaten tracks.

First on the list is Gallery on the Corner's exhibition HOPE featuring new works by ASHA, an art projct supporting people who's lives have been affected by violence. Tucked away down a flight of stairs on Northumberland Street, Gallery on the Corner is a beautiful space promoting inclusive art - it was originally set up to show work by artists who have disability, mental health problems as well as from disadvantaged backgrounds. A great space, ethic and with some unique artwork - HOPE is on until July 14th http://thegalleryonthecorner.org.uk/

Second, and something a bit different The Bon Bon Box is the first of a series of unqiue happenings from Dream Out Loud events and will be popping up underneath Bon Vivant on Thistle Street Sunday 1st July 11am-6pm.  Mostly for the ladies (although men welcome to join too!) The Bon Bon Box will offer a 'magical social shopping event' with everything from vintage clothes to jewellery and plenty of other fabulous curiosities. Word is there's going to be some vintage hair do's and planty of chat... sounds perfect! Check out their blog  http://www.idreamoutloud.co.uk/ and get on over there for a wee treat.
