As soon as we heard that May 17th’s RBS Museum Lates was themed as a Dino-Night, The Red Door Gallery knew it was the perfect event for jewellery designers Tatty Devine to host their first workshop in Edinburgh.
Museum Lates is a quarterly event in The National Museum of Scotland, when Live Music is played, Food and Cocktails are served, Faces are Painted and The Red Door Gallery offers Workshop Events. Previously we have created giant mosaic murals with Robbie Porter, DIY Owl Masks with A Wooden Tree and Viking Badges with Astrid Jaekel. The Tatty Devine collection combines art with fashion and fun – just what a workshop needs – so we were just delighted when the ever talented Tatty Devine co-founder and Creative Director Harriet Vine accepted our invitation and began working on an unique, dinosaur themed necklace design, just for this event! We have been working with Tatty Devine for a number of years now, as we showcase their wearable art pieces in our bricks and mortar gallery and online. One of our favorite statement pieces from Tatty Devine is their on- theme Giant Dinosaur Necklace.
The Red Door Team of Jason, Claire, Lindsey, Ashley and Nicky were joined by Harriet Vine and the lovely Flo from Tatty Devine to help the museum visitor’s join in with the workshop and Beat the Clock Jigsaw Competition. The Red Door Gallery presented Dinosaur Themed exhibition of illustration of prints by Hanna Botma, Robbie Porter, Belle and Boo and 1973. These works are all available in our online shop and were very well received on the night.
Our Beat The Clock Jigsaw Competition was a timed jigsaw assembly challenge. Made from an illustration by Hanna Botma, Dino Trip 2 (above) is by Hannah Botma, to see and buy the whole Dino Trip series, click here. Hannah will graduate from Edinburgh College of Art’s Illustration Masters this year. The fastest person to assemble the jigsaw and winner of a £30 gift voucher for The Red Door Gallery was Vicky Wren who completed her jigsaw in a remarkable 36 seconds! Second place went to Viv who finished in 40 seconds, Viv was the reigning champion for most of the night, but was pipped to the prize post!
The Tatty Devine Dino Bone Workshop was a roaring success, with over 100 people seated and through the workshop in the 3 hour long evening. As you can see from the great photographs above everyone was captivated, focused and we had a lot of very keen customers!
Not only was this necklace designed by Tatty Devine especially for The Red Door Gallery’s workshop, but no two necklaces will be the same! There was such a variety of colours to choose from plus the option of adding your own finishing details with an array of marker pens. Some clever cookies decorated one side of the bones and left with a unique, double-sided necklace, worth at least £35!
Towards the end of the evening, Nicky Brooks Creative Manager at The Red Door Gallery introduced Harriet Vine to an eager audience in the Lecture Theater! We were very pleased to be able to host the first Art & Design lecture to be held at RBS Museum Lates. Harriet told the charming and inspirational story of Tatty Devine’s early days, gave us a glimpse at their design process, business model and a *sneak preview* of the highly covatable Autumn/Winter ’13 collection, due into The Red Door Gallery and online mid August. It was a privilege to hear Harriet talk in person and we are very pleased she made the journey from London to offer our workshop event and deliver a enjoyable presentation in person.
Needless to say, The Red Door Gallery Team had a huge amount of fun working with Tatty Devine at RBS Museum Lates and we have had a fabulous response from our audience and regulars regarding the event. Our sincere Thanks to everyone involved, on the night and behind the scenes.
Our event photography was taken by the eagle eyed AJL Ansell photography studio and prints are available to purchase. Please email andrew@ajlansell.co.uk for more information or to book a sharp shooting photographer for your future event.
