The Red Door Gallery presents Tatty Devine Dino Bone Necklace Workshop at RBS Museum Lates

WEB-AJLA_workshop-details copy

As soon as we heard that May 17th’s RBS Museum Lates was themed as a Dino-Night, The Red Door Gallery knew it was the perfect event for jewellery designers Tatty Devine to host their first workshop in Edinburgh.

Museum Lates is a quarterly event in The National Museum of Scotland, when Live Music is played, Food and Cocktails are served, Faces are Painted and The Red Door Gallery offers Workshop Events.   Previously we have created giant mosaic murals with Robbie Porter, DIY Owl Masks with A Wooden Tree and Viking Badges with Astrid Jaekel.   The Tatty Devine collection combines art with fashion and fun – just what a workshop needs – so we were just delighted when the ever talented Tatty Devine co-founder and Creative Director Harriet Vine accepted our invitation and began working on an unique, dinosaur themed necklace design,  just for this event!  We have been working with Tatty Devine for a number of years now, as we showcase their wearable art pieces in our bricks and mortar gallery and online. One of our favorite statement pieces from Tatty Devine is their on- theme Giant Dinosaur Necklace.

The Red Door Team of Jason, Claire, Lindsey, Ashley and Nicky were joined by Harriet Vine and the lovely Flo from Tatty Devine to help the museum visitor’s join in with the workshop and Beat the Clock Jigsaw Competition.  The Red Door Gallery presented Dinosaur Themed exhibition of illustration of prints by Hanna Botma, Robbie Porter, Belle and Boo and 1973.  These works are all available in our online shop and were very well received on the night.

Our Beat The Clock Jigsaw Competition was a timed jigsaw assembly challenge.  Made from an illustration by Hanna Botma, Dino Trip 2 (above) is by Hannah Botma, to see and buy the whole Dino Trip series, click here.  Hannah will graduate from Edinburgh College of Art’s Illustration Masters this year.  The fastest person to assemble the jigsaw and winner of a £30 gift voucher for The Red Door Gallery was Vicky Wren who completed her jigsaw in a remarkable 36 seconds!  Second place went to Viv who finished in 40 seconds, Viv was the reigning champion for most of the night, but was pipped to the prize post!

The Tatty Devine Dino Bone Workshop was a roaring success, with over 100 people seated and through the workshop in the 3 hour long evening. As you can see from the great photographs above everyone was captivated, focused and we had a lot of very keen customers!

Not only was this necklace designed by Tatty Devine especially for The Red Door Gallery’s workshop, but no two necklaces will be the same!  There was such a variety of colours to choose from plus the option of adding your own finishing details with an array of marker pens.  Some clever cookies decorated one side of the bones and left with a unique, double-sided necklace, worth at least £35!

Towards the end of the evening, Nicky Brooks Creative Manager at The Red Door Gallery introduced Harriet Vine to an eager audience in the Lecture Theater!  We were very pleased to be able to host the first Art & Design lecture to be held at RBS Museum Lates.  Harriet told the charming and inspirational story of Tatty Devine’s early days, gave us a glimpse at their design process, business model and a *sneak preview* of the highly covatable Autumn/Winter ’13  collection, due into The Red Door Gallery and online mid August.   It was a privilege to hear Harriet talk in person and we are very pleased she made the journey from London to offer our workshop event and deliver a enjoyable presentation in person.

Needless to say, The Red Door Gallery Team had a huge amount of fun working with Tatty Devine at RBS Museum Lates and we have had a fabulous response from our audience and regulars regarding the event. Our sincere Thanks to everyone involved, on the night and behind the scenes.

Our event photography was taken by the eagle eyed  AJL Ansell photography studio and prints are available to purchase.  Please email andrew@ajlansell.co.uk for more information or to book a sharp shooting photographer for your future event.

The RBS Museum Lates has become one of our favorite events in the calender and we are already planning our next workshop!  To hear more about our upcoming events, please join our mailing list, follow us on twitter or find us on facebook.

Marathon Bar or Hanna Melin Trainers Print, which would you prefer?

We should probably be embarassed that our first association with The Edinburgh Marathon is this retro chocolate bar.  It emphasises the high ranking prioity of chocolate in our estime, but then that's the beauty of running, all you really need is food, water and the right set of trainers and your off!

If you rate running, perhpas you'd rather have a peep at the route the runners will be taking tomorrow rather than staring at a crumpled up wrapper!  Have a peep below:

Starting just down the Royal Mile from us at Holyrood Park, the route twists and winds all the way out tthrough Londnidrey to Gossford House... and back again to Mussleburgh.  Its a long way alright, a Marathon some might say.  So much respect for anyone even atempting this uber event!

If your looking for a wee prize for a marathon runner, we'd reccomend Hanna Melin's Trainer print, £10, much better than an empty chocolate bar, right?

Exhibition not to be missed by J. Gordon Brown!

J. Gordon Brown's solo exhibition opened on Friday at Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen and we were lucky enough to attend the unveiling of his incredibly impressive body of work! The show is a breathtaking collection of oil paintings, film and print based on Brown's love of colour and light including the two works above 'Flower' and 'Night Walk'. His skill and ability with oil paint is obvious through his astoundingly beautiful blending and application of colour. The works are a testament to the concept of colour evoking emotion and that some great painters still remain under the radar despite hard work and innovative ideas. We think this exhibition may just be the end of that for Brown though! The exhibition runs from the 10th of May to the 15th of June at Peacock Visual Arts at 21 Castle Street, Aberdeen and is most definitely worth viewing in person for full impact!

Dreamy Tunes She And Him Volume 3

We are big fans of She and Him in the gallery so we were very happy to hear that Volume 3 was upon us!!
Volume 1 & 2 frequents many of our playlists here in the gallery as well as at home.
The wonders of technology means we get to hear Volume 3 on Spotify before its official release here in the UK on May the 14th. You can be sure that we'll be down the record store on release date, nothing beats getting your hands on a brand new cd or vinyl, maybe we're showing our age, but you can't beat a rummage in your local independent record store!!
Their new album is the perfect sunny pop record, full of dreamy vocals that you come to expect from Zoe Deschanel!
Deschanel wrote 11 of the 14 tracks in between the filming for her hit sitcom New Girl.
She's one talented and let's not forget super stylish girl!
Here's their retro cool video for In The Sun, poking fun at High School Musicalesque pop videos!

We hope you enjoy the new album as much as we do

Geometric Loveliness from @StudioHarlen

We are really quite big fans of geometric patterns here in The Red Door Gallery so we are very excited to shout about one of our lovely new stockists Studio Harlen.
Fresh through our red doors are their striking new bags in a variety of bold geometric patterns.
The lovely ladies behind these funky bags are Kate Underwood and Sophie Harris, starting STUDIO HARLEN in 2011.
They design, screen print and make all their products from their London based studio. This hands on process makes each one unique and special.
Their bags and accessories are simply constructed and beautifully designed adhering to the Bauhaus philosophy of ‘form following function'.
It's pretty difficult to choose a favourite but if we had to it's this Kit Bag above, great for a weekend away or if like us you carry too much stuff around then it's a great everyday bag too!
Stop by the gallery to take a look at this great collection or check out their bags in our online shop.
